Stathis’s making resides at the convergence of conceptual art, ceramics and concrete poetry. His interest derives from how the material qualities of a thing, influence our understanding of its expressive function.
Stathis works predominately with clay, found objects, text fragments and verses. By playfully assembling and mixing these elements, he tries to create paradoxical and metaphorical associations.
Stathis was born in Volos (Greece) and lives and works in London. After first studying Chemical Engineering in Athens, he then trained as a potter with Michalis Sclavenas and later in London he continued with an MA in Fine Arts by project at the Cass Faculty of Art, LondonMet University.
Stathis was a finalist for the Royal Society of Sculptors Public Art Award 2015, the National Sculpture Prize 2016 and the Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize 2016. His work was included in ceramic Biennials and public collections in Portugal, Spain, Austria, Germany and Romania.
He has recently exhibited at the London Group Open 2023 and the ING Discerning Eye 2023. Stathis is a member of the London Group, ArtCan, London Potters and the Royal Society of Sculptors. He performs and collaborates regularly at the European Poetry Festival.
